About Pontypool

Pontypool is in Monmouthshire, in South Wales, by the river Afon Lwyd. The town’s name derives from a bridge near to the forge pool (Pont Poell). Pontypool is one of three towns in the Torfaen region, the other two being Cwmbran and Blaenavon.

Visitors can enjoy the historical ‘Bracchis’ café on Broad Street, named ‘Mario’s Cafe’. This is a reminder of the wonderful chrome plated coffee shops set up by Italian immigrants in the 19th Century.

Pontypool Museum is housed within a Georgian stable block on the north side of Pontypool Park and features displays of the town’s famous Japanware. Visitors can discover more about the town’s history here, with its collections of Victorian life, its churches and chapels and industrial past. The history of the Torfaen region is told through visual presentations.

Within the museum’s Barker Gallery, visitors can browse through its fine art exhibitions as well as ceramic displays and sculptures.

Pontypool Rugby Football Club was founded in the 1870s and became a legendary team for Welsh Rugby and the town remains very proud of its sports legacy.
